Honda Interceptor v45 Description

’s V45 Interceptor

The AMA Superbike class rules also mandated that the race bike use the same chassis as the production machine. So the Interceptor rolled into Honda showrooms on ComCast alloy wheels led by a 16-inch wheel up front. There was also a race-inspired box-tubing perimeter frame, Honda’s Pro-Link single shock rear suspension system with a cast-alloy swing arm, as well as 39mm front forks with adjustable rebound dampening and mechanical anti-dive control.

The bike’s controls were simple and racy, with low, flat handlebars and set-back foot pegs. The fuel tank was designed to be narrow, allowing the rider to tuck in behind the bike’s fairings.

The Interceptor’s engine was a 748cc, 90-degree, DOHC V-4 with four-valve heads and 10.5:1 compression. The engine was liquid cooled and a pair of radiators: one mounted on the frame below the steering head and another mounted low, just in front of the crankcase and behind the front wheel, with ducting directing airflow inward. The idea behind the split coolers was to minimize the bike’s frontal area and to keep the weight as low as possible.

Truly a sport bike for the history books, but trouble would soon haunt this racy newcomer. Camshafts in Honda’s V-4 engines began failing due to either (depending on what you read) substandard camshafts or a bad cam bearing design conceived to speed up and lower the cost of the engine’s production. The reliability of the engines became so widely faulted that Honda nearly abandoned the design altogether.
