Late in 1997, I purchased her with 5000 miles, in like-new condition from its original owner, a retired American Airlines pilot. Having seen her only pictures, we arranged to meet at a halfway point between Colorado and Texas to strike a cash deal.

Over the next year, I prepared to realize a dream I share with many of you. Inspired in part by a book that had sat on my suburban home’s coffee table for close to a decade: “10 years on Two Wheels”. A ride from Colorado to Argentina. I met two other riders with similar plans and decided to join them.

I freed myself from both a stiffling corporate job and from the melancholy of a failing marriage. In the early spring of 1999 I met my travel companions for the first time in McAllen, Texas. We crossed the border into Mexico a few days later, riding our fully equiped machines. The trip lasted through the summer, ending in Buenos Aires. Unforgetable. Memorable.

The Motorcycle performed beautifully. Easy to maintain, durable, powerful, and versatile. She handled with ease roads that ranged from perfectly paved Andean highways in Peru to the rugged and narrow Death Road to Yungas in Bolivia. Its extended range proved invaluable in desolate stretches of the Atacama desert.

Once back in the US, the following repairs were addressed:

• Stock Rear shock absorber replaced with Ohlins
• Front shocks & brakes dealer serviced
• Rear Axle drive replaced by BMW dealer (a shaft seal improperly replaced in Argentina made this necessary)
• Valeo starter replaced by Motorrad Elektrik

Fully ready for our next adventure, she has been waiting in my garage for more than two decades. Unfortunately for her, after the trip, my life got busy fast: new job, new wife, two kids, two dogs, mortgage etc. She waits at 36900 miles.

Is she immaculate? No, but she is an amazing motorcycle that at traffic lights turns the heads of people like you. Those who know what she really is: A Freedom Machine. Maybe yours.
